Happy New Year, Austin!

Towns and cities all around the globe are putting the finishing touches on their preparations for upcoming New Year’s celebrations. To make your planning a little easier, we thought we’d share some ideas of ways you can ring in the new year.

Austin’s New Year 2018

Austin’s New Year 2018 is no doubt a huge draw for a family-friendly atmosphere and fun for all. This event happens at Vic Mathias Shores (Auditorium Shores) and is alcohol free. Parents can enjoy the live music while the kids check out the Kid’s Magic Forest. Then, you can end the night with a bang with fireworks at 10pm on Lady Bird Lake (Town Lake). Sit on blankets under the stars and bring treats and snacks of your own.

Insider tip:

Use some of that Christmas money to reserve a room at the Hyatt Regency on Barton Springs. You can watch the fireworks from their patio aside Lady Bird Lake. They also allow dogs at the hotel, so you can bring the entire family! Don’t want the hotel room? Walk on over for dessert or appetizers at the hotel restaurant anyway. Even if you sit inside, you can walk out onto the patio during the fireworks. Be sure to check out the map and list of frequently asked questions so that you are adequately prepared for this super fun night.

Pinballz Noon Year’s Eve Party

Pinballz Noon Year’s Eve Party is also sure to be a blast. They provide crafts and snacks for the kiddos and the best part is that it is at noon. No need to keep the littles up half the night. Let them party from 10:30 to noon with a balloon drop and then tuck them in right on time as usual.

Noon Year’s Eve Party

Lake Travis Community Library also hosts a Noon Year’s Eve Party at 11AM on the 31st. The kids will get to make their own hats and noisemakers and then children’s musician Joe McDermott will perform at 11:30am. Snacks are provided and the kids will be able to toast the 12 o’clock hour in a kid-friendly way.

Gourdough’s Public House New Year’s Eve Party

Gourdough’s is also hosting a family-friendly New Year’s Eve party. This fun event will have games to play right at your table and there will be sparking juice for the kids and champagne for the adults. The TV’s will be showing all the New Year’s programming and there will be poppers and sparklers for all. Head down to Gourdough’s between 8:00pm and midnight to join the fun!

Barrel Bash 2018

Barrel O’ Fun is hosting a New Year’s Eve Family Barrel Bash! This family oriented event is for all ages and will have dancing, karaoke, and crafts for all. Your ticket includes a party hat, noise maker and an apple juice for the group toast. This is super fun and it runs from noon til 3pm with the toast at 2:30pm. Polar Bear Splash

If jumping into a cold pool sounds like something you are up for, the Polar Bear Splash might be right up your alley. Visit the Barton Springs Pool for free on January 1st beginning at 5AM and enjoy free coffee and donuts after your chilly dip. The water will be a balmy 68 degrees so this is a great wake to awaken your senses in the new year.

Firecracker and Fireworks Safety

Please remember to be safe with fireworks and firecrackers. Keep in mind that these are not permitted within Austin city limits. If you do choose to engage in setting off your own pyrotechnics, please use utmost caution. Wear goggles, have a bucket of water or hose nearby, and keep children at a safe distance. Furthermore, read and follow safety instructions on the packages. Even though my new blow dryer’s instructions might seem strange for advising people to “not to use while showering,” it is there because someone did. Take them seriously, even if the instructions on the box seem petty.
