Summer Springboard is an amazing organization that is helping high school students (and their parents!) get ready for college. We interviewed the team to give you greater insight into this leadership development opportunity and how Summer Springboard can benefit your high school student.
Q: What exactly is Summer Springboard?
A: Summer Springboard specializes in helping high school students get ready for college. Their comprehensive, immersive summer program is designed to help students prepare for SAT’s, identify their direction, and choose the school that is best for them. Summer Springboard utilizes a curriculum that helps students identify who they are at their core and that is what drives them to pursue a specific field. Their mission is as follows:
“Our mission is to help students increase their self-awareness so they can make decisions about college selection, academic majors, and careers that reflect their personal vision for success.”
Q: Who is eligible for Summer Springboard?
A: Students had to have completed their freshman year of high school before the start of the program. Additionally, students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and must have completed the Summer Springboard application and essays in its entirety. International students are also eligible as long as their TOEFL scores are above 550.
“It helped me figure out who I am and I was provided with tools that I could use later on in the future. It also gave me time to reflect on who I want to be, overall it was very useful.”
Q: Where and when do these immersive summer programs take place?
A: The two-week long program is held on the campuses of Yale and UC Berkeley. Students can choose to stay on campus for the whole duration or they can choose to commute at a reduced cost. These campuses have been selected to host because they both offer rich educational history while at the same time providing state of the art facilities for students to enjoy. This summer, the dates are as follows:
- UC Berkeley
- 1st Session: June 24 – July 7, 2018
- 2nd Session: July 8 – July 21, 2018
- 3rd Session: July 22 – August 4, 2018
- Yale University
- 1st Session: July 8-21, 2018
- 2nd Session: July 22-Aug 4, 2018
Q: What is included in the price?
A: There are two price points for students who live on campus and those who commute. The following is included in the price:
- Full room & board in university dorms at UC Berkeley or Yale (for on-campus students)
- Transportation during program
- Pre-Departure support
- 24 hour on-campus staff residential support

“I got to gain new things about myself. [The experience] made me realize new things about myself that I did not even know.”
Q: Why is it worth the money?
A: According to an article published by students at Penn State University, 75% of college students change their majors at some point in their college careers. Often times, when a major change occurs, several credits are left unused and the money to pay for those credits is essentially wasted. Summer Springboard is created to help students get to know themselves better and thus make wise decisions about their futures. Invest in this valuable program before they begin college and it very well may end up paying for itself over and over down the road. Q: Who’s idea was this anyway?
A: Summer Springboard was founded by Andrew Motiwalla, who also founded Terra Education, Global Leadership Adventures, and Discover Corps. He is highly-educated, has experience working with non-profits, and is driven by his passion for experiential education. He has hired a dynamic team of people who work with him namely the Campus Directors. Dianne and Megan run logistics and support for the students who come to each campus for Summer Springboard programs. The dedication of these individuals, among others, is what makes Summer Springboard better than all the rest.
“The ‘True You’ is an amazing area and I feel students worldwide should also think about [attending] because it helps you be yourself.”
“It was helpful in helping me understand who I am and how I should act accordingly.”
“My track teacher was amazing and I’d highly recommend him to anyone else that wanted to know more about tech. He pushed us hard, but it was well worth it in the end. I absorbed a lot of useful information as well which I’m really happy about.”
