Texas Advocates fights to stop unfair treatment and advocates for more and better services for people with disabilities to be included in their communities. Texas Advocates is recognized as the leader in self-advocacy in Texas.
The 85th legislative session is upon us! We need help getting our advocates to the Capitol to educate our legislators about important decisions that will affect people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Big decisions are being made regarding services in our community, institutional budgeting, transportation and more- our disability advocates need to be heard!
Our advocates want our legislators to know:
We want to live in the community: Please protect our health and safety by continuing to move people with intellectual and developmental disabilities off Medicaid waiver waiting lists! Please maintain current funding for quality, consumer directed supports and services. All people with intellectual and developmental disabilities should have a chance to live full and happy lives if they live with the rest of us in our community rather than State Supported Living Centers (SSLC). All people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the right and should be given the chance to live in their own home communities and neighborhoods with the proper supports.
We want real jobs for real pay: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities want to work in the real world! We deserve a minimum wage! Sheltered workshop wages don’t pay our bills. We can work alongside everyone else. Please help us find jobs that highlight our strengths and talents. We need more qualified job coaches that understand self advocacy and self determination.
